As families prepare to gather for the holidays and the new year ahead, health experts at Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS) are reminding residents that prevention is the best gift you can give yourself and your loved ones this festive season.

From its early days as a small unit to today’s 12-bed specialized care space, the BGH Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has grown alongside the tiny patients it cares for.

Since its launch in February 2024, BCHS’ Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Clinic (CAPC) has seen a continuous increase in referrals and community need.

For September's Chief of Staff Feature, we sat down with Dr. Bilal Ahmed, a BCHS anesthesiologist whose personal and professional journeys span continents and reflect a deep commitment to patient care, community service, and clinical excellence. 

Angela’s connection to BCHS began with a deeply personal experience. More than three years ago, her son faced a mental health crisis that brought them to Brantford General Hospital. “It was traumatizing for both of us,” she recalls. “That experience showed me the gaps in care but also the potential for something more holistic.”

This tiny, but mighty, unit is made up of 25 nurses, 9 pediatricians, a clinical manager, and many other important team members — all working tirelessly to give premature newborns as early as 32 weeks the best possible start in life. We spoke with members of the team to hear what makes the NICU so special, and why caring for these little fighters means so much to them.
