At Brantford General Hospital’s (BGH) Critical Care Unit (CCU), care extends far beyond medicine. Through the Three Wishes Program, BCHS helps humanize the experience of dying for patients facing unrecoverable illness — offering comfort, dignity, and connection when it matters most.
After navigating spaces where representation was limited, Dr. Medina is now working to change that reality for others. Through scholarships, mentorship, and dedicated resources, he’s helping Black students pursue careers in healthcare—building pathways so the next generation of professionals don’t feel alone in lecture halls, clinics, or boardrooms.
When Dr. Andrew Burkett started his journey with Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS) in 2023 as the Chief and Medical Director of Internal Medicine, it didn’t take long to see his impact. Now, stepping into the role of Chief of Staff and Vice President of Medical and Academic Affairs, he brings both experience and vision for the future of healthcare in our community.
For this BCHS Occupational Therapist (OT), independence isn’t just a goal — it’s a turning point in someone’s life. Rebecca Durand began her career in 1999 in community care before transitioning to geriatric rehabilitation, where she discovered her passion for in-person collaboration with interdisciplinary teams. After relocating to Brantford in 2003, she joined BCHS and never looked back.
For Rabiah, being featured in BCHS’ I Belong campaign during Black History Month is more than recognition—it’s a celebration of African heritage, community, and identity. From the togetherness of Nyama Choma festivals to the comfort of shared meals like Ugali, these traditions reflect the power of food, music, and celebration to bring people together across backgrounds.
This year we celebrate National Resident Doctor Appreciation Week during the week of February 19 – 13. This week is celebrated across Canada to highlight the commitment of medical residents.
As part of its commitment to high‑quality, patient‑centred care, Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS) continues to strengthen how laboratory testing supports safe and effective treatment. Each year, BCHS’ lab performs approximately 2.6 million tests. Blood work makes up a significant portion of this activity — not only because it is essential for diagnosis and to guide treatment, but also because it is an area of medicine that continues to evolve with new evidence and best practices.
