BCHS Celebrates Major Milestone in Emergency Department Renovation Improvement Project

Brantford, ON – Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS) is proud to announce an exciting milestone in its Emergency Department (ED) Renovation Improvement Project with the opening of the new Andersen Ambulatory Assessment Area – Zone 7 at Brantford General Hospital.
Opening for patient care on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, this modern, 2,200-square-foot space expands the Emergency Department to over 25,000 square feet and is purpose-built to support patients with lower-acuity care needs. Designed to improve patient flow, comfort, and accessibility, this new area features six single-patient treatment rooms, six treatment chairs/recliners, a dedicated minor procedures room, modern medical equipment, and enhanced waiting areas.
“This space is transforming how we deliver emergency care,” said Dr. Somaiah Ahmed, Chief & Medical Director of Emergency Medicine. “It allows us to serve patients more efficiently, while offering a better experience for both patients and staff.”
“This is more than just an expansion of our Emergency Department,” said Bonnie Camm, BCHS President & CEO. “It represents the future of healthcare we’re building together – a future where care goes beyond the clinical and where spaces reflect the dignity, comfort, and respect every patient deserves.”
In recognition of a transformational philanthropic gift to the BCHS Foundation, the space has been officially named the Andersen Ambulatory Assessment Area – Zone 7.
“Erik and Birthe Andersen’s exceptional and generous donation leaves an incredible legacy that will benefit community healthcare for generations to come” says Kari Wilson, Executive Director of the BCHS Foundation. “We are deeply grateful for this tremendous gift to benefit emergency care at BCHS.”
We would like to thank the Ontario Ministry of Health, Brant Community Healthcare System Foundation and its donors, our BCHS Redevelopment and construction teams, our Emergency Department care teams and staff, and all of those involved with the project who have worked tirelessly to turn this space into a reality.
As the Emergency Department Renovation Improvement Project continues to progress, the next phase of construction will focus on renovating the existing ED waiting room, triage, and patient registration areas.
The overall Emergency Department Renovation Improvement Project is expected to be completed by early 2027 at an approximate cost of $32 million.
With support from generous donors, the BCHS Foundation has raised over $8 million to date to meet both provincial funding requirements and to purchase essential medical equipment for the ED Project. Without the support from our donors, the renovation project would not be possible. Information about the ED Renovation Improvement Project is available on the hospital’s Reimagine BCHS website.
