Note: Specimens which must be examined by culture include: all specimens for non-genital sites, cases of sexual abuse/assault, all medico-legal specimens from pre-pubertal children, <16 years of age, and test of cure.

 

Female: Endocervical swab collection

Remove excess mucus from the cervical area with the large tipped cleaning swab provided, discard when complete.

Insert the endocervical specimen collection swab into the cervical canal and rotate for 15 to 30 seconds.

Withdraw the swab carefully. Avoid contact with the vaginal mucosa.

Immediately place the cap/swab into the transport tube. Make sure the cap is tightly secured to the tube. Label the tube with the patient information and date/time of collection.

Male: Urethral swab collection

Insert the mini-tip culturette direct swab 2-4 cm into the urethra and rotate for 3-5 seconds.

Withdraw the swab and place the cap/swab into the transport tube. Make sure the cap is tightly secured tot he tube.

Label the tube with patient information and date/time collected.

Note: Faulty collection and delays in transport of specimen are the primary causes of test failure.

Urine - PHL will not perform on children < 12 yrs of age

Direct patient to provide first-catch urine (approximately 20 to 30 mls of initial urine stream) into urine collection cup free of any preservatives. Female patients should not cleanse labial area prior to providing specimen.

Remove cap from urine specimen transport tube and transfer 2ml of urine specimen transport tube using disposable pipette provided. the correct volume of urine has been added when the fluid level is between black fill lines on urine specimen transport tube label.

Re-cap urine specimen tube tightly. This is now known as the 'processed' urine specimen.

Storage and Transport

If the specimen cannot be transported directly to the laboratory, the swab should remain at ambient temperature and the urine should be placed in a fridge. Once in the laboratory the swab specimen should be stored at room temperature until processing and the urine should be placed in the fridge.
