Nursing Students Thrive at BCHS

Say hello to Brooke Murphy.

Brooke is a Level II Nursing Student in the Mohawk-McMaster BScN Program and recently started her clinical placement on the Inpatient Rehab unit at BCHS.

“I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do and I actually took Mohawk’s pre-health program, which guided me in the direction of nursing”, says Murphy.

“It was a 1 year certificate program and I just really love helping people. I always appreciated the work that other people did and I wanted to get into it myself.”

A cornerstone of the program is its hand-on practicum learning under the close supervision of Registered Nurses, which RN Kalina Janik, Clinical Instructor for Mohawk College in the Mohawk-McMaster collaborative program, says is critically beneficial for student development and growth.

“I find this program to be very beneficial in their learning. Nursing is a very hands on job, and no matter how much you study in abook you learn on the job,” says Janik.

“So this is actually very vital to their development as nurses. You can read all about it but you don’t really know until you doit.”

Currently, Level II Nursing students spend one day a week from 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. in a clinical setting, which increases as they continue through the program.

Brooke says she loves the program “inside and out” and says she is looking forward to getting to know all the other nurses and collaborating with them.

When asked if she has words of encouragement for anyone thinking about pursuing a similar program or a career in nursing she says; “Just go for it! You’ll learn quickly whether you like it or you don’t and chances are you probably will like it because you’re working with people.

"We need more people to become nurses.”
