New Oncology Position Expands Cancer Care Access at BCHS

Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS) recorded more than 11,300 oncology-related visits last year, reflecting the growing demand for cancer care in the region.

To help meet that need, BCHS is adding a new medical oncologist position, funded by Ontario Health – Cancer Care Ontario (CCO). In August, Dr. Michelle Bradbury will join BCHS, marking a significant step forward for cancer services in Brantford, Brant County, Six Nations and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.

“This new role is a direct response to the growing demand for cancer care in our community, and we greatly appreciate Cancer Care Ontario for funding the position,” said Dr. Andrew Burkett, Chief and Medical Director of Internal Medicine at BCHS. “It’s about bringing care closer to home.”

Oncology – the field of medicine focused on cancer treatment – is typically divided into three main areas: surgical, radiation, and medical oncology. This new position falls under medical oncology, which involves systemic therapies such as chemotherapy and newer molecular treatments.
