Finding Purpose in Every Shift

Every shift in the Emergency Department brings something different. One moment can call for quick critical thinking, while the next is about offering reassurance to someone during one of the most difficult days of their life. For Alanna Rootes-Johnson a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN), it's that combination of clinical challenge and human connection that has made emergency nursing an incredibly rewarding career at Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS).

Her journey at BCHS began as a nursing student on the Post-Surgical Unit before joining the Clinical Resource Team (CRT), where she gained experience caring for patients across the hospital. In 2021, she found her home in the Emergency Department (ED) —a place where every day presents a new opportunity to learn, grow, and make a meaningful difference.

"As an RPN in the Emergency Department, I work in different zones throughout the unit, providing a variety of acute care to our community," she explains. "Every patient is unique, and every shift brings new experiences."

Working in emergency medicine has shaped her both professionally and personally. From strengthening her assessment, communication, and problem-solving skills to recognizing critical changes in a patient's condition more quickly, every interaction has contributed to her growth as a nurse.

"Professionally, I've gained countless skills that I continue to build on every single day," she says. "Personally, I've built friendships that will last a lifetime. Working in the Emergency Department has also given me perspective—it reminds you to appreciate the little things and never take time with your loved ones for granted."

Throughout her career, supportive colleagues have played an important role in her development. She credits mentors like her manager, Pam, who helped guide her as a new ED nurse, and Charge Nurse Ankie, whose encouragement, expertise, and willingness to answer questions have helped build her confidence.

"I've been fortunate to work alongside so many incredible people," she says. "The entire team has been supportive since day one, and that's something I truly value about working here."

While emergency nursing is fast-paced and unpredictable, it's often the simplest moments for Alanna that reaffirm why she chose this profession.

"Every day there's a moment that reminds me I'm exactly where I'm meant to be," she shares. "Whether it's a patient thanking you for being kind during one of the hardest moments of their life or knowing you recognized something serious early and helped provide timely, life-saving care, those moments stay with you."

For those considering a career in nursing, Alanna offers a simple message: never lose sight of the person behind the patient.

"When becoming a nurse, treat every patient the way you would want someone to care for you or your family," she says. "Kindness makes a lasting difference. Patients may not remember every detail of their visit, but they'll remember how you made them feel."

She also encourages new nurses to embrace every opportunity to learn.

"Always ask questions," she says. "Never feel like you should already know everything. Even after 10 years, I'm still asking questions because that's how you continue to grow."

When asked why she recommends BCHS to those looking to begin or advance their healthcare career, she doesn't hesitate.

"BCHS offers so many opportunities to grow," she says. "Starting in the Clinical Resource Team gave me experience across the hospital before finding my passion in Emergency. I also love that we're a community hospital. It's a place where people know your name, leaders are approachable, and you feel like you're part of a team. That sense of connection makes a huge difference."
