Finding Opportunity in Every Experience: A Career Journey in ICT

It’s often forgotten that behind every patient interaction is a network of systems that help keep care moving. Supporting those systems are dedicated teams who work behind-the-scenes to ensure staff have the tools and technology they need to provide care. For Ashley Johnson, that support has become a meaningful way to contribute to the hospital and the community it serves.

While completing her Computer Network Engineering and Security Analyst program at Mohawk College, Ashley joined BCHS as an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Co-op student in summer 2025, not realizing that this only marked the start of her journey at BCHS.

“The hospital was a wonderful opportunity to contribute and support an environment that has such a meaningful impact on the community,” she says. “Everyone genuinely wants to help each other succeed.”

After a year of building experience, making connections, and supporting technology in healthcare, Ashley transitioned into a permanent position with the ICT team.

Today, as a Service Desk Agent, Ashley is often the first point of contact for staff seeking technical support. Her days include answering calls, responding to Help Desk emails, monitoring the ticketing system, and helping staff troubleshoot everything from hardware and software issues to login and access problems.

“Working at BCHS has strengthened both my technical and interpersonal skills,” she reflects. “The fast-paced healthcare environment challenges me to think critically, communicate effectively and adapt to the changing needs of staff.”

Knowing that her work helps staff access the technology and systems they need—and ultimately supports the hospital’s operations—has been especially rewarding.

“Being able to support staff and knowing that I’m helping keep important systems running has definitely confirmed that I’m in the right field and workplace.”

Just as important to her development has been the support of her ICT colleagues. For Ashley, BCHS has demonstrated how much a supportive team can shape a career and how the people around you can make all the difference.

“Everyone is willing to collaborate and help one another,” she says. “Being in a supportive environment where asking questions and sharing knowledge is encouraged allows me to do my best work.”

For those considering a career in technology, her advice goes beyond developing technical expertise.

“I would tell them to keep learning and ask questions,” she shares. “Technology is constantly changing and evolving so it is important to stay curious and be able to adapt.”

She also emphasizes the importance of communication when working in a service-focused technology role.

“Understanding the person behind the technical issue can be just as important as understanding the technology itself,” she reflects. “While technical skills are important, you can’t effectively help people if you aren’t listening and communicating properly.”

Ashley’s journey reflects a lesson that continues to shape her career: “Take advantage of every opportunity and chance to learn—you never know where it might lead.”
