Eating Disorders Awareness Week 2022

Did you know that over a million Canadians are living with an eating disorder (ED) diagnosis and that eating disorders have the highest overall mortality rate of any mental illness?

Every year, Eating Disorders Awareness Week (EDAW) groups across Canada unite to take action, provide education, and bring attention to eating disorders. The National Eating Disorder Information Centre (NEDIC) has identified this year’s awareness campaign theme as, “Everyone has a role to play.”

This theme has unique resonance in the healthcare setting, as a multidisciplinary approach is essential to ED management and treatment.

Two of our clinical Registered Dietitians, Lori Elyk and Courtney Wilson, comment further:

“As Clinical Dietitians, we have specialized education, training, and practical insight into the biopsychosocial factors, treatment and care associated with EDs; however, we are just one part of a required team of care providers. We hope that this year’s NEDIC campaign – which includes tools to support ED screening, conversations, diagnosis, and up to date community resources – will help fill the gaps as ED prevalence continues to rise. People living with EDs are a high risk, vulnerable population and treatment programs are underfunded and overburdened. Awareness to this at all levels is needed.”
