Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS) has been recognized as a Choosing Wisely Canada Hospital with Quality Improvement Status, highlighting the organization’s commitment to providing high-quality care while using resources thoughtfully, and effectively. The honour also makes BCHS just 1 of 3 hospitals in Ontario with this esteemed recognition.
Choosing Wisely Canada works with healthcare organizations across the country to reduce unnecessary tests, treatments, and procedures while supporting conversations between patients and health-care providers about care that is truly needed. Hospitals can achieve the Choosing Wisely Canada Quality Improvement Hospital designation by demonstrating their commitment to these principles through initiatives such as Using Blood Wisely, Using Labs Wisely, and quality improvement projects based on Choosing Wisely recommendations and toolkits.
For BCHS, one of these quality improvement initiatives focused on a simple but meaningful question: Do all patients undergoing routine elective surgery need the same preoperative blood tests?
