A Commitment to Lifelong Learning

For Nazia Zeb, continuing her education isn't simply about earning certificates—it's about ensuring every patient receives the highest quality of care.

Working in Outpatient Mental Health has reinforced her belief that patients deserve clinicians who are knowledgeable, skilled, culturally responsive, and committed to lifelong learning. "The field of mental health is constantly evolving,” she says. “As a social worker and psychotherapist, I wanted to continue building my clinical skills so I could provide evidence-based, trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and person-centred care."

Driven by that commitment, she has completed more than ten advanced clinical trainings over the past several years, including certifications in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Trauma-Focused Therapies (TFT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and most recently, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

"What excites me most is learning practical interventions that can immediately improve the lives of patients experiencing trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, and other complex mental health challenges."

She applies those skills directly in her practice, expanding the therapeutic approaches she can offer while tailoring care to each person's unique needs. She also shares her knowledge with colleagues through Lunch and Learn sessions and informal consultation, helping strengthen clinical practice across the team.

"Continuous learning benefits not only my own practice but also strengthens our entire mental health program," she says. "By bringing advanced clinical knowledge back to the team, I can support best practices, contribute to shared learning, and enhance the quality of care we provide."

Looking ahead, she plans to continue advancing her expertise in trauma therapy and evidence-based mental health interventions through additional certifications.

She credits both BCHS’ Centralized Education Fund (CEF) and her manager for making that journey possible. The program has helped remove financial barriers to professional development, while her manager's ongoing encouragement has supported her growth every step of the way.

"My manager's unwavering support of my professional development has made a meaningful difference, and I sincerely appreciate BCHS’ investment in its staff," she says.

Reflecting on her experience, she says she’s most proud of one thing: turning every learning opportunity into better care for others. "Knowing that this learning ultimately helps improve the lives of others is my greatest accomplishment,” she reflects. “The impact extends beyond my own development—it benefits the individuals, families, and community we serve every day."
