Nursing Graduate Guarantee Program

BCHS is a proud participant in the Nursing Graduate Guarantee Initiative (NGG).

The NGG is a program funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Through this initiative, Brant Community Healthcare System supports new Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses by providing them with a full-time employment opportunity, above staffing complement. This improves their transition into practice, and into full-time employment.

The NGG Program at BCHS consists of:

1. BCHS Nursing and inter-professional in person orientation to support comprehensive understanding of Standards and Policies
2. A competency based learning pathway and learning plan to support the nurse’s learning needs
3. 12 weeks of unit-based orientation with a preceptor to support the transition of the new graduate into practice
4. Regular check-ins with Clinical Educators and Clinical Coordinators
5. Transition into a nursing role upon completion of the program

New Graduate Residency Program

BCHS recognizes that the transition from student to professional nurse can be challenging. The New Graduate Nurse Residency Program makes this transition easier by providing one year of enhanced support for our newest nurses.

During their first year at BCHS, Nurse Residents can expect:

• Support from a New Graduate Nurse Coordinator
• 24 hours of additional education
• Empowerment to make positive changes within the organization
• Opportunities to build support systems with peers

Participation in the New Graduate Nurse Residency Program is contingent upon the approval of the hiring manager.

Supervised Practice Experience Partnership (SPEP)

BCHS has been accepted as an eligible hospital to hire Internationally Educated Nurses (IEN) to participate in a Supervised Practice Experience Partnership (SPEP).

Participation in the SPEP program is open to internationally educated nurses (RN or RPN) with evidence of practice that has expired no more than 5 years before applying to the program.

The program offers applicants the option to complete a supervised practice experience in Ontario to demonstrate current nursing knowledge, skill and judgement, and language proficiency skills.

What you need to know about the SPEP:

• The SPEP is a partnership between Health Force Ontario (HFO) and College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
• SPEP participants are termed “Internationally Educated Nurse (IEN) Learners” at the BCHS and are not registered nurses or nursing students
• IEN Learners are provided with 300 to 450 clinical hours with a registered practical nurse (RPN) or registered nurse preceptor (RN)
• IEN Learners must successfully complete the registration examination approved by the CNO for the type of nursing (RN or RPN) they want to practise in addition to the Jurisprudence Exam prior to the start of their clinical hours at the BCHS
• IEN Learners will receive support from the IEN Learner Coordinator

Interested candidates must apply through Information for Applicants (cno.org) to get matched with the BCHS.

IENs who have initiated registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), have received a CNO letter of direction and meet one of the following:

• Are in any year of study in a CNO approved program, such as a BScN-IEN program, PN-IEN program, or are completing a micro-credential plan with a curriculum to meet the CNO requirements for registration (e.g., Standards of Practice for nursing, Entry-to Practice Competencies, Evidence of Safe Practice, Evidence of English Language Proficiency)
• Or have completed their educational requirements (e.g., BScN-IEN/PN-IEN program or micro-credentialing) and are waiting to write their registration exam

Certifications, Training, and Learning at BCHS

• BCHS offers Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certification, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification
• Fetal Health Surveillance (FHS) andNeonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) courses
• Preceptor education
• Mock code training exercises
• Reimbursement of job-related education through the Centralized Education Fund (CEF). TheCEF has been created to support staff by providing monetary assistance to those who are furthering their education, knowledge and skills related to professional growth within their role at BCHS.

BCHS has been accepted as an eligible hospital to hire nurses through a Community Commitment Program for Nurses (CCPN) Program. It is a program that offers eligible nurses up to$25,000 in incentives for the 24-month commitment.

To be eligible the applicant must:

• Not have been employed as a nurse in Ontario in the six (6) months prior to being hired,
• Hold a Certificate of Registration in good standing from the College of Nurses of Ontario,
• Commit to 24-months of employment at a full-time work schedule offered by the employer, and
• Not simultaneously receive funds from the Ministry of Health for the Tuition Support Program for Nurses.
