Products of conception. Specimens in order of choice are fetal skin, cord and placenta. Placenta is not the best option due to risk of maternal cell contamination. Chromosomal Microarray of Perinatal tissue will not be done on placenta tissue.

Cytogenetics studies are not performed in The Brantford General Hospital Laboratory. Clinicians and departments requesting this testing must contact the Regional Cytogenetics Laboratory at McMaster University Medical Centre (see section V.) to determine if the specimen meets testing criteria and for specific handling instructions. (905) 521-2100 ext 73707.  Costs for testing and specimen transport are the responsibility of the submitting department and are not paid for by the Department of Laboratory Services. Forms for the Regional Cytogenetics Laboratory (Cytogenetic Requisition Other than Cancer) can be found on the HRLMP test information guide located on their website. Additionally, requisitions, sterile specimen containers and tissue culture medium (Minimum Essential Medium) can be obtained through the Anatomical Pathology - Histology Department. Call ext 2460/2456 Monday to Friday 0600-1600 hrs. After hours contact ext 2447

 

Formalin renders the specimen unsuitable for cytogenetics testing. Submit an additional specimen to Pathology for routine processing.

Storage and Transport

 Stored in a sterile container with MEM, and shipped ASAP via taxi to MUMC
