Collection Information
  1. Collect specimen as early as possible following the onset of symptoms.
  2. Specimens should be obtained from:
    1. Infants/Toddlers (not toilet trained) – Collect faeces sample from soiled diaper or directly from “potty”
    2. Older Children/Adults – Instruct the patient to defecate into a clean container.
    3. NOTE: Faeces specimens that have been in contact with water in toilet are unacceptable.
  3. Aseptically remove cap from vial.
  4. Using spoon, place approximately 1-2 grams of patient’s faeces into the container, replace and tighten cap.
  5. Label the specimen container with the patient’s full name.

Lab Process Notes Referral laboratory uses multiplex gastrointestinal viral real-time PCR assay which detects and differentiates Adenovirus, Rotavirus, Norovirus GI and Norovirus GII
Storage and Transport
  • Specimen should be transported ASAP to the laboratory in biohazard bag after collection.
  • Specimen should be stored and transported at 2 - 8°C or on wet ice after receipt within 48 hours of collection.
