Collection Information

Nasopharyngeal swab or aspirate and/or a throat swab should be collected within seven days after onset of rash.

20mL Urine should be collected. Urine should be collected within 14 days of onset of rash and submitted in a sterile container. 

1 mL CSF required for testing - Test from CSF requires approval from Microbiologist at Public Health Laboratory

Routine Turnaround Time

3-5 days

21 days for positive Measles genotype test.

Stat Turnaround Time

Critical measles testing for vulnerable populations/patient settings may be available outside of regular hours upon special request and approval from a Public Health Laboratory Ontario - Microbiologist. 

Critical Values  Positive result information is made available to the health care provider
Lab Process Notes Doctor must contact PHL Microbiologist for testing on CSF

Storage and Transport

Specimen should be transported to the laboratory as soon as after collection.

Specimen should be stored at  2-8°C  after collection.
