Collection Information
  • The nurse or physician will remove IUD.
  • Removal of an IUD usually can be accomplished by grasping the string with a forceps and exerting firm, steady traction. If strings cannot be seen, they can often be extracted from the cervical canal by rotating two cotton -tipped applicators.
  • Inspect the IUD after removal to ensure that it is intact.
  • Once IUD is extracted, carefully place it in the sterile container, avoiding further contamination with any other surfaces or materials.
  • Label the specimen container 

Rejection criteria:

  • Swab of IUD is unacceptable for culture.
  • Specimen collected in nonsterile container is unacceptable for culture.

Storage and Transport
  • The specimen should be transported to the laboratory as soon as possible after collection in biohazard bag.
  • The specimen should be stored at room temperature after receipt in the laboratory. 
  • Do Not refrigerate specimen.
