EAR

Once ear is selected as the source of the swab a further description can be entered using the source dictionary. For instance:

  • EARLF- Ear left
  • EARR- Ear right

If the area of concern is outside the ear area the specimen should be entered as a wound.

Collection Information

The nurse or physician will take a swab of the ear area.

The swab is then quickly transferred to the transport media.

The specimen should be labeled appropriately and sent to the laboratory.

If eardrum is ruptured, collect exudate by inserting a sterile swab through an auditory speculum. Place swab in transport media

As growth is detected and identified the information is made available to the health care provider.

Storage and Transport

The swab should be maintained at room temperature until transport to the lab. Once in the lab the specimen will be stored at room temperature in the microbiology rack.
