A further description of the site from where the specimen was collected should then be entered. The bone source, description and donor number are entered at the appropriate section in Meditech, this information is obtained from the Mount Sinai Hospital Bone Bank requisition.

This is only to be used for donor bone cultures, all other bone cultures should be entered as TISSUE.

Specimen Type

A fragment of donor bone and a swab of the donor bone should be submitted for testing.

The fragment of bone is aseptically transferred to a sterile container.

As growth is detected and identified the information is made available to the health care provider.

A donor bone requisition may accompany the specimen this is to be kept on the wound bench for 7 days.

Storage and Transport

Specimen should be brought to the laboratory as soon as possible.
