All research projects involving BCHS physicians, staff (including staff acting as investigators outside the Institution), students (i.e., research within the institution or using institutional resources), or patients, must obtain ethical approval from the BCHS Research Ethics Committee (REC) before research can begin. The REC is responsible, on behalf of the institution, for ensuring that all research involving human subjects under the auspices of its institutions meet current ethical standards. The BCHS REC (REC) operates under the principles of the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS). The purpose of this statement is to review research studies, monitor, provide guidance and policy development on issues relating to research in clinical and patient care.
