1. Is your baby's bottom tucked into the back of the car seat as far as it can go?

2. Are the harness straps at, or below, the baby's shoulders?

The harness straps should be fed through the slot that is at, or below, baby's shoulders - not above.
3. Are the harness straps free of twists or wrinkles?
The harness straps must lie flat across baby's body to spread forces over as wide an area as possible in a sudden stop situation.
4. When you look at the back of the car seat, is the harness strap doubled-back (when appropriate)?
The harness strap can slip through the buckle and become loose. Doubling the strap back prevents the strap from slipping.
5. Can you place 1 finger between the shoulder harness and the baby's collar bone?
If you can fit more than 1 finger under the strap, tighten it more.
6. Are the harness straps snug?
The straps should lie in a relatively straight line without sagging.
7. Is the harness chest clip at baby's armpit level (at least 3 inches below a newborn's chin)?
This helps to keep the harness straps from slipping off baby's shoulders.
