Pelvic Ultrasound

Pelvic ultrasounds are performed in both males and females. In females the exam is primarily used to examine the uterus and ovaries. In males, bladder and prostate are primarily examined. A full bladder is generally required in order to perform the exam. In female patients a "transvaginal" ultrasound exam is sometimes used as well to provide highly detailed views of the uterus and ovaries. The exam is painless and is generally completed within 30 minutes.

Pelvic ultrasounds can provide information about:

• Pelvic masses arising from the uterus, ovaries and bladder.

• Ovarian cysts.

• Bladder stones.

• Size of the prostate.

• Signs of infection, pelvic abscesses.

• Abnormal pelvic fluid collections
