IV Therapy
at the Brantford General Hospital
-As early as 1665 medication was being given intravenously in order to observe the effect upon the recipient– we use the term ‘medication' loosely as the procedure was the injection of opium and wine into dogs - with a quill and bladder.
-In 1667 a 15 year old boy suffering from madness was transfused with 9 ounces of lamb's blood. Not surprisingly, this resulted in the first transfusion reaction. Nor did it cure his madness!
