Critical Care Unit
Intensive Care Unit/Cardiac Care Unit

Features

The Critical Care Unit is currently located on the top level (5) of the new D wing at the Brantford General. We provide care for adults and families of Brant County who require medical, surgical and cardiac critical care services.

Our Philosophy of Care

We provide a holistic (body, mind and spirit) approach to care while utilizing specialized state-of-the-art technology for patients with life-threatening single or multi-system organ failure and close monitoring of patients at high risk of developing critical illness.

We are committed to family-centred nursing care. This means you are invited to participate in the care of your loved one. The staff of Critical Care respect each person's uniqueness. Please discuss with staff, individual and cultural preferences. We encourage you to provide input into the care. You know your loved one better than anyone else.

As part of our service, we provide community education as it relates to health and quality of life issues (cardiac education, advanced directives.)

Visitors Information

To meet the needs of the patient and family in Critical Care, we have adopted an open visitor policy. There are no restrictions on when and how long you can visit. Please discuss with the staff what works best for you and your loved one.

The process of admitting and stabilizing your loved one in the Critical Care Unit can take 15 minutes to an hour or longer. Please use the phone in the waiting room to notify the staff that you are there. The nurse will ask you to come in at the appropriate time. A delay may be necessary related to the patient's condition, or care being given. Please enter the unit through the sliding door that states, "no admittance".

A Registered Nurse and members of a multidisciplinary team will be providing the care in the Critical Care Unit. The registered Nurse caring for your loved one will be happy to answer your questions. Technical equipment is required to care for your loved one. The staff will explain the equipment to you.

If you choose to spend the night, the staff will provide you with pillows and blankets. Pastoral care is available to all patients and their families. Your own Pastor is welcome. The chapel is located on A wing, Level 2 (one floor above Tim Horton's)

Clinical Trials

The Critical Care Unit is involved in two sets of clinical trials designed to provide information to improve processes within hospital systems.

Coronary Care Unit "Fastrak"

The purpose of the programme is to collect, analyze and disseminate data on patients experiencing Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) and direct that information back to participating centres. The primary goal is to improve ACS patient care at the individual hospital level through the evaluation of data and the assessment of care delivery systems.

Intensive Care Unit "MDS"
(Minimum Data Set)

A data collecting system for Intensive Care Units. This initiative is a collaboration with the Critical Care Research Network, (CCR-Net).

Its goals are:

  • Identify opportunities to improve patient outcomes and reduce inappropriate resource consumption.
  • Provide opportunities for decision makers to review the results with research colleagues and generate further research hypotheses and quality improvement projects.
  • Describing ICU practice patterns in the CCR-Net hospitals.
