Gastroscopy
An examination of the stomach using a gastroscope - a thin flexible tube with a light

The Procedure:

Gastroscope is swallowed by the patient after the throat has been numbed by a local anesthetic. Intravenous sedation may also be given.
The doctor can view the inside of the stomach and biopsy tissue if necessary
May take from 5 to 15 minutes to complete. It can be used in the diagnosis of many disorders.

Pre-treatment:

Nothing by mouth after midnight day of exam
Arrange for a ride home if you plan on having sedation. A cab ride is acceptable.

             

Post treatment:

If sedation is given, do not drive for the remainder of the day.
Take nothing by mouth for 30 minutes, then drink fluid and progress on to a regular diet.
May resume normal medication
Rest the remainder of the day
If no sedation has been given you may leave after the exam is completed.
