Colorectal Cancer Screening program
at The Brantford General Hospital

diagram of colonBowel Cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer. Ontario has the highest rates of colorectal cancer, CRC, in the world.

In 2007 an estimated 7,800 Ontarians will be diagnosed with CRC and 3,250 will die from the disease.

It is the second leading cause of death from cancer in the province. Yet if it is detected early, CRC can be cured.

Project Goals

  • Increase screening rates
  • Improve capacity for primary care providers to participate in colorectal cancer screening programs province-wide.
  • ColonCheckCancer funds screening for all asymptomatic average risk men & women, who are 50 years of age or older, every 2 years using Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) kit.
  • Those with a positive FOBT or at increased risk (with a first degree family member with colorectal cancer) should be referred for a colonoscoy at the age of 40 yrs. or 10 yrs. earlier than the relative's diagnosis, whichever comes first.
  • In March of 2008, ColonCheckCancer will distribute FOBT kits to primary care physicians and pharmacies and through Telehealth Ontario.

Studies show that a recommendation from a primary care physician dramatically increases participation in cancer screening.

Fecal Occult Blood Test Kits are supplied at physician's offices, pharmacies and through Telehealth Ontario (for those without a family physician).

Mail your kit, in an address provided, pre-stamped envelope, which goes to a central laboratory and you will be notified of your results.
