Operating Room - Registered Nurse RN
Registered Nurse First Assist RNFA

Full-time and Part-time

The RNFA demonstrates professional development and clinical competency; utilizes the nursing process to assess plan, implement and evaluate patient care; addresses health educational needs for patients and families, and other health care providers; manages patient care assignments as well as other organizational tasks related to patient unit operations and acts in a clinical leadership role in the coordination of patient care for all assigned patients. Reporting to the Manager, the successful applicant will be responsible for providing evidenced based, comprehensive, safe, effective and ethical nursing care to all clients in need of Perioperative services

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS:

•  Graduate of an accredited college/ university nursing program

•  Registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario

•  Accredited RNFA course with experience in the role within the last 2 years

•  Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification

•  Laser certification

•  Certification in delegated controlled acts

•  Current CNA Perioperative Nursing certification

MANDATORY COMPETENCIES:

Cognitive:

•  Initiates interventions efficiently, safely, and skilfully, using sound clinical judgement and professional collaboration/consultation

•  Demonstrated ability to work within a Total Patient Care Delivery system in which regulated health care professionals practice to their full scope adhering to the practice standards as defined by the College of Nurses of Ontario

•  Demonstrated ability to implement critical thinking theory in the application of nursing knowledge and perioperative patient care

•  Creative problem solver with a solution focus and patient-centred approach

•  Demonstrated ability to communicate and use effective interpersonal skills with colleagues and other members of the BCHS and external partners

•  Demonstrated knowledge of patient safety standards published by regulatory bodies and principles of risk management in the Perioperative environment.

•  Ability to multi-task and set priorities in a high intensity and rapidly changing environment

•  Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with a team focus

•  Enhances the quality of perioperative nursing care through direct patient care, mentoring and role modelling, and collaboration with health care team members

•  Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and personal development in nursing and integration of evidence based practice into daily practice

•  Mature, reliable individual with excellent attendance record and able to work all shifts

Technical:

•  Provide knowledge-based technical assistance such as using surgical instruments, handling tissue, providing exposure, achieving hemostasis, and wound closure

•  Possesses the essential fine motor skills to provide skilful technical assistance to the surgeon

•  Skilfully applies principles of asepsis and infection control

•  Preparation and administration of medications perioperatively as directed by surgeons and anaesthesiologists

PREFERRED:

•  PACU experience an asset

•  Member of RNAO
