An examination of the stomach using a gastroscope - a thin flexible tube with a light

The Procedure:

  • Gastroscope is swallowed by the patient after the throat has been numbed by a local anesthetic. Intravenous sedation may also be given.
  • The doctor can view the inside of the stomach and biopsy tissue if necessary
  • May take from 5 to 15 minutes to complete. It can be used in the diagnosis of many disorders.


  • Nothing by mouth after midnight day of exam
  • Arrange for a ride home if you plan on having sedation. A cab ride is acceptable.
  • If you have not made arrangements for a ride home after your procedure we are unable to safely discharge you and your procedure may be cancelled.

Post treatment:

  • If sedation is given, do not drive for the remainder of the day.
  • Take nothing by mouth for 30 minutes, then drink fluid and progress on to a regular diet.
  • May resume normal medication
  • Rest the remainder of the day
  • If no sedation has been given you may leave after the exam is completed.
