An examination of the bronchi, trachea and lungs

The Procedure:

  • A bronchoscope is used (flexible tube with a light)
  • It is inserted into the mouth, down the throat and into the lung
  • It usually takes 15 - 30 minutes

  • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before.
  • Blood work as ordered by your Doctor.
  • Have someone available to drive you home as you will be given light sedation before and during the procedure. If you have not made arrangements for a ride home after your procedure, we are unable to safely discharge you and your procedure may be cancelled.

Post treatment:

  • Stay 1 hour after and have blood pressure and pulse checked.
  • Nothing to eat or drink 3 hours after the test.
  • Be sure the freezing in your throat has worn off before drinking fluids. When you can feel yourself swallow you can drink. Do not scald your throat with hot drinks. The anaesthetic generally wears off in about half an hour. After waiting three hours and you can begin taking in fluids and eat normally unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
  • If you were sedated for your procedure, you are advised to rest for the day and do not drive.
  • Continue with your medications as before unless directed by your doctor.
  • Call your doctor for a follow up appointment. Do not hesitate to call your doctor if you have any concerns.
