Specimen Type:   

A swab of the area that is of concern to the health care physician. Samples can be from abscess, burns, cellulitis, drainage, incisions, lesions or ulcers.

Collection Information:  

Remove surface material by wiping with sterile saline or 70% alcohol.

The nurse or physician will take a swab of the area in question.

The swab is then quickly transferred to the transport media, then labeled appropriately and then sent to the laboratory.

Storage & Transport:  

The swab should be maintained at room temperature until transport to the lab. Once in the lab the specimen will be stored at room temperature in the microbiology rack.
