Collection Information:   The nurse or physician will take a swab of the throat area.

The swab is then quickly transferred to the transport media.

The specimen is then labeled appropriately and then sent to the laboratory.

Throat and rectal swabs for GC investigation are ordered as genital.

Specimen of choice for determination of N.meningitidis carrier status is a nasopharyngeal swab (not a throat swab).

Lab Process Notes :    
Storage & Transport:   The swab should be maintained at room temperature until transport to the lab. Once in the lab the specimen will be stored at room temperature in the microbiology rack.
