Brantford General among the lowest mortality rates in the country for seventh consecutive year

For the seventh consecutive year the Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS) is among the top hospitals in Canada with the lowest death rates. This year BCHS is fifth in Canada.

The achievement was announced by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) in Ottawa with the release of the national 2015/16 Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratio (HSMR), which measures the number of actual deaths compared to expected deaths in hospitals that meet a statistical threshold of 2,500 or more HSMR cases in each of the last three years.

BCHS recorded a rate of 74. This rate betters the average scores for the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health Integration Network (HNHB LHIN), Ontario and Canada, as these rates are 91, 91 and 93 respectively. The HSMR baseline is 100. The lower the number is below 100 indicates the hospital has fewer deaths compared to the national average. The HSMR adjusts for risk factors including patients transferred between other hospitals, diagnosis and age.

“Patient safety and quality improvement initiatives remain priorities at the Brant Community Healthcare System,” said Jim Hornell, President & CEO of the BCHS. “We are proud of these results and proud that we continue to be a top-rated healthcare organization in the nation.”

The achievement was released by CIHI through www.YourHealthSystem.ca – an interactive website that helps Canadians learn more about the Canadian health system, as well as the health of others around the country.

“Our staff works hard to ensure high quality patient care which is reflected in this excellent national rating,” said Dr. Christopher O’Brien, Chief of Staff at BCHS. “We should all be very proud of what we as an organization have accomplished as we strive to continuously improve to provide the best care for our patients.”
