What is the Diabetes Education Centre?

The Diabetes Education Centre provides teaching and support to people with diabetes and their families.

Diabetes Educators help people develop skills to care for themselves to prevent the complications of diabetes. (Health problems that can be caused by diabetes)

Who Can Attend?

We have an open referral policy. If you would like to attend any of our programs, call our number at the bottom of this web page.

What Programs Are Offered?

Pre-assessment

Basic teaching for people new to Type 2 diabetes which includes individual assessment and group teaching by both nurse and dietitian. A pre-assessment appointment will last half a day.

Individual Counselling

Individual assessment and counselling by both nurse and dietitian for people that need an individual approach. An individual appointment is appropriate for people who are not newly diagnosed with diabetes, for people that must start insulin therapy or for people who have difficulty learning in a group setting.

Outpatient Insulin Starts

Individual assessment and counselling by both nurse and dietitian for people starting insulin therapy. followup is provided to adjust insulin doses until blood sugar goals are reached.

Followup

Regular followup is offered as needed.

Basic Class

Group classes in which the basics of Type 2 diabetes are taught. Classes include two morning or two evening sessions.

Type 1 Diabetes Class

Group classes in which issues important to children and adults with Type 1 diabetes are taught. Classes are held three times a year in the evening.

Flexible Insulin Therapy Class (FIT)

Group classes for those already on insulin that wish to learn to adjust diet and insulin for more intensive and flexible management of diabetes. Classes include two morning sessions.

Gestational Diabetes Class

This is a group class for women who develop diabetes during their pregnancy. It is a two hour class that is held once a week.  Call for the dates of the class.

Paediatric Clinic

Provides a team approach to the on going care of children with diabetes. Children are seen by a paediatrician, nurse and dietitian on a quarterly basis.

Paediatric Education

Individual assessment and survival teaching at the time of diagnosis by a nurse and dietitian for children and families new to diabetes and their families. On-going follow-up and education is provided. Families and children new to diabetes are encouraged to attend the Type 1 diabetes Class. Children should be over the age of 12 to attend.

Insulin Pump Therapy

Initiation of insulin pump therapy and follow-up as necessary
