The Driving Assessment Program at The Willett, Paris
The Driving Assessment Program enjoys the approval of the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario.
What is the program
The Driving Assessment Program is unique. It gives individuals who have been ill, suffered an injury or a disability, a chance to have a comprehensive, professional evaluation of driving skills, which meets the regulations of the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.
Who can sign up?
Those who wish an assessment are referred by their doctor through the Ontario Ministry of Transportation. However, families and individuals can also obtain information about this program by calling Lisa Dwyer at 519-751-5506. Once you have made an appointment, an information sheet will be sent, confirming an appointment has been made. The Driving Assessment is comprised of two parts and they are as follows:
Part One: Occupational Therapy Assessment
Candidates are tested for vision, perceptual and cognitive ability, reaction times, and knowledge and understanding of road signs and rules of the road. Physical assessments are carried out and medical and driving histories are taken.
Part Two: In-car Assessment
The second stage of the driver assessment, taken after successful completion of Part One, involves an in-car evaluation with the instructor. This segment ensures that a prospective driver can safely and effectively handle the vehicle in various driving situations.
Candidates are assessed in their own vehicles or in one provided by the driving centre.
Who Receives the Results?
Test results and recommendations are discussed with the individual and sent to the referring doctor, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and, if applicable, to third party payers. The final decision about licensing rests with Transportation Ministry representatives.
The Driving Assessment Team
Sam Lagali, who heads the Driving Assessment Program, is an occupational therapist with extensive experience in rehabilitation. He is a member of the Association of Driver Educators for the Disabled.
Dan Purdy, a skilled and experienced driving instructor, oversees the in-car evaluations.
What Does a Driving Assessment Cost?
The Ontario Health Insurance Program, (OHIP), does not cover the cost of the Driving Assessment Program.The fee to Clients who pay for assessment themselves is:

$400.00 Full Assessment

$200.00 Partial assessment if necessary
The fee to clients whose expenses are covered by (third party payers) i.e. Private Insurance, Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) or Vocational Rehabilitation Services is:

$550.00 Full Assessment

$275.00 Partial Assessment if necessary
Payment is due on the day of your booked assessment.
