Care at Home after Needle Biopsy of the Prostate
How You Might Feel After Your Operation
- You may feel slightly nauseated, light-headed or sleepy for 24 hours after your anaesthetic.
- You may have a slight temperature for 2 days.
- You can expect to have an ache in the area of biopsy and mild discomfort when passing your urine.
- You may notice a small amount of blood in your urine and semen that may last up to 3 weeks.
Pain and Medication
- Ask your surgeon about resuming your usual medications.
- Use the pain medication that is prescribed for you when you need it.
Nutrition
- Eat light foods for the first day, such as tea, toast, soup and Jell-O® - drink extra fluids.
- If diabetic, follow your surgeon’s instructions regarding diet and medication.
Activity and Exercise
- For the first 24 hours after your surgery, do not drive, operate heavy equipment, drink alcohol, smoke or make important decisions.
- Arrange for someone to be with you the first night at home.
- Some fatigue can be expected for a few days after your operation.
- Avoid any activity that strains the area of your surgery such as straining for a bowel movement.
- Ask your surgeon when it will be safe to return to your regular activities and work.
Follow-Up Care
- Call your surgeon’s office to arrange a follow-up appointment.
You will need to call your doctor if you have:
- A fever that persists after 2 days;
- More than a small amount of bright red bleeding from the area where the needle was used;
- Redness, swelling, a foul smelling discharge or pain where the needle was used;
- Trouble passing your urine;
- Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea that persists beyond 24 hours.
If you cannot contact your doctor,
go to the nearest Emergency Department. |
