Our Code of Ethics

This Code applies to all employees, physicians, volunteers, students, officers and directors of the Brant Community Healthcare System.

•  We are committed to dealing fairly and ethically with all whom we associate with and to conduct ourselves in accordance with our values.

•  We will adhere to a high standard of corporate ethics.

•  We will comply with all applicable BCHS policies and procedures, laws, rules and regulations and will avoid any activities that could involve or lead to involvement in any unlawful practice.

What is the Corporate Ethics program?

Our Corporate Ethics program is designed to improve how we deal with ethical situations in the work place. It is intended to reflect and preserve the highest ethical standards of patient care, clinical ethics and business practices. The key elements of the Code of Ethics include training in ethical ideas, legal responsibilities and who to talk to.

These obligations apply to our relationship with…

•  Patients

•  Physicians

•  Third Party Payers

•  Volunteers

•  Students

•  Contractors

•  Suppliers

•  Consultants

•  One Another

Reporting of Concerns

While each of us is individually responsible for putting the Code to work, we need not go it alone.

The BCHS has a number of resources, people and processes in place to answer questions and guide us through difficult decisions. Copies of the Code are available from the Human Resources Department.

If you have questions regarding this Code or if you are in doubt about the best course of action in a particular situation, you should seek guidance from your supervisor.

If you suspect a violation of the Code of Ethics relating to hospital policy, or of law we encourage you to inform your supervisor or one of the officers listed below. They will respond to you quickly and (depending on the complexity of the issue) the issue will be reviewed in a timely manner.

If you find yourself in a situation where the “right thing” is unclear or doing the “right thing” is difficult, you can begin by remembering our values.

Ask yourself:

“Does my action reflect the principles of Trust, Respect and Integrity? What are the consequences to my patients, to my co-workers, to my hospital and to myself?”

**It is important that people not conduct their own investigations. These situations may involve complex legal issues and acting on your own may be the wrong choice.**

For specific information check the Policy/Procedure Manual in your department or on the BCHS computer system.
